MEET THE CREATIVE DIRECTOR

Larry Amponsah

In the ever-evolving language of fashion, where identity and intention shape culture as much as cloth and design, few moments feel as defining as a true transformation.

Creative Director, Holmz

Larry Amponsah is an artist and thinker whose practice interrogates the ideological underpinnings of image-making, challenging the orthodoxy of traditional techniques while critically examining the mechanics of visual culture. His work explores how historical imagery, cultural artifacts, and collective narratives are repurposed, deconstructed, and reassembled to question systems of power and representation.

Rooted in painting yet transcending its conventional boundaries, Amponsah’s process is one of intervention—transforming, printing, and cutting into archival images before layering them into intricate collages. These compositions, refined through mechanical processes and painterly precision, become sites of tension and dialogue—where history converses with the present, and fragmented realities give rise to new possibilities. His work is not merely an aesthetic pursuit but a philosophical excavation, revealing the politics of perception and the mutable nature of truth in a world saturated with images.

As an Associate Lecturer at Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, Amponsah brings his critical and experimental approach into academic discourse. He holds an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art (2018), following studies at Jiangsu University, China (2016), and a BFA from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana (2015). From 2018 to 2020, he served as a Trustee of The Kuenyehia Art Trust in Ghana. His accolades include a shortlist for the 2019 Dentons Art Prize and the Be Smart About Art Award (2019). His work is held in prestigious collections, including The Wellcome Collection in London, marking his contribution to the evolving landscape of contemporary art.

On learning to see materials differently.

At HOLMZ, clothing and accessories are not simply crafted. They create symbols. Symbols of power, of becoming, of the stories we carry and the legacies we are yet to build. What Holmes does is not new as an idea. Hermès has been printing commissioned artworks onto silk for over a century. What is new is the insistence that the artists be fully present in the process. Not as licensors but as makers. The conversation does not end when the image is handed over. And Holmz is starting this story with it’s own creative director. Meticulously designed by contemporary artist and designer Larry Amponsah and his visionary team at HOLMZ.

HOLMZ stands at the intersection of heritage and ambition. It represents the transference of wisdom from one generation to the next. A narrative thread that resonates deeply within today’s cultural landscape, where authenticity and story are the true currencies of influence.
